The National Safety Council reports that there are nearly 50,000 car crashes in parking lots and garages across the nation every year. An average of 60,000 people are injured and more than 500 die annually in parking lot and parking garage car and pedestrian accidents.
The leading cause of distracted driving in general is cell phone use and experts believe that is also part of the problem when it comes drivers navigating a parking lot.
In fact, 66 percent of drivers surveyed reported feeling comfortable making calls while traveling in parking areas, while 50 percent said texting and viewing other social media was ok when driving off regular roads, streets and highways.
Whether it is texting or making calls, drivers falsely believe that slower speeds make it safer to take their eyes off the road ahead. However, it is just as dangerous to be distracted in a parking lot full of pedestrians driving 5 miles per hour as it is going 50 mph. Not only are other drivers and their passengers at risk, but those on foot do not stand a chance against a car out of control.
Distracted drivers pose a real danger to other drivers and pedestrians when it comes to auto accidents in parking garages or parking lots. Parking areas can also present dangerous slip, trip and fall areas for pedestrians because of poor maintenance, inadequate or misleading signs, and poor lighting too.
