This upcoming Saturday, July 1st, a new law making texting while driving a primary offense takes effect in Iowa which will enable law enforcement officers to issue a ticket if they observe a motorist texting while driving.
Previously, officers were limited to issuing citations to texting drivers only when they committed another offense in addition to texting, such as running a red light. As of this weekend, the gloves are officially off so drivers caught texting, checking social media sites and the like may be pulled over.
Under the new law, the fine for texting while driving is $30, but add in the court costs and drivers are looking at about $100 a ticket. The prospect of being pulled over along with the fine will likely deter many drivers.
Some feel that it is just in time, given the expected increase in July 4th holiday traffic. Because texting while driving increases crash risks 23 times over non distracted driving, and 1 and 3 drivers admit they are guilty of the practice, many believe stricter laws will make the roads safer for everyone.
