Every year since 2016, a Mile of Silence is observed during RAGBRAI to remember those injured or killed while cycling. A large contingent of cyclists ride each year to remember those killed, paralyzed or injured by vehicles while on their bikes.
RAGBRAI itself has had its share of motor vehicle collisions involving bicyclists training for, or participating in, the event underscoring the risk riders face when sharing the road with motorists who often do not see bicyclists or may be distracted or driving recklessly resulting in an accident.
- In 2012, a Florida man participating in RAGBRAI was injured after being struck by a motorist who did not see the bicyclist in the roadway.
- In 2013, a Boone, Iowa man was struck from behind while training for an upcoming RAGBRAI. The driver was charged with a misdemeanor for operating a vehicle too close to a bicyclist.
- In 2015, a young Iowa woman planning to participate in the 2016 RAGBRAI was struck by a distracted driver texting on their phone.
Preventing Bicycle Accidents
While there is no perfect solution to bring biker injuries and fatalities to zero, a combination of stricter penalties, improved education to alert bikers and motorists to the risks and responsibilities of sharing the road, stronger infrastructure, and cyclists speaking up for their rights can help prevent accidents. Progress is already being made in the in the state of Iowa:
- Just a few years ago, calls for stricter distracted driving laws made texting while driving a primary offense in Iowa, meaning drivers can be pulled over if they are seen using an electronic device while operating. Texting also joined drinking, drag racing, and fleeing the police as evidence of reckless driving,
- Biker friendly updates on Iowa roadways are currently in the works including the addition of wider paved shoulders on rural roadways and dedicated bike lanes in urban settings.
- Various campaigns to raise awareness and educate the public regarding bicycle safety are recognized every year including National Bike Month in May and National Bike Day on June 3rd encouraging Iowans to give biking a try while observing safety tips that apply to both bicyclists and motorists.
